Community Education Project
FLORIDA
The Community Education Project team developed lesson plans for college-level Food Studies courses but the lessons can be adapted to fit K-12. The central themes of the unit concern public history and slavery and the unit connects The 1619 Project to our community garden and research incarcerated students have been conducting on slavery in East Florida for the past three years. Students utilized the lessons to interrogate how local histories of slavery in East Florida are commemorated at former plantations.

Through the study of primary source documents as well as the experiential learning in the community garden, students will be asked to reimagine how stories about slavery are told.
