Chicago Middle School Social Science
ILLINOIS
This team of educators worked to support middle grades students, including English Language Learners and Special Education students, in exploring their role in upholding democracy. In their unit, students utilize The 1619 Project and other materials to explore the roles Black Americans have historically played in defending democracy, to investigate members of their local communities defending democracy today, and to ask what they might do to be a defender of democracy themselves.
