The Cal State LA team has worked to create a comprehensive understanding of the historical origins and current effects of colonization, slavery, and incarceration on contemporary artmaking. Art and Design in the Community asks students to use knowledge gained from the 1619 project, supplemental historical texts, and contemporary art created by artists during their experiences with incarceration to create a collaborative group exhibition with an immediate call to action for its audience.
