Herbert L. White
GRANTEE
Herbert White, The Charlotte Post's editor-in-chief, has been at The Post since 1987, moving from general assignment reporting to managing editor in 1991 and his current position in 1993.
The newspaper has earned several state and national awards during his tenure, including a pair of General Excellence honors from the North Carolina Press Association (first in 2016, third in 2004). He earned first in Enterprise Reporting for a 2021 Pulitzer Center-supported project on barriers the formerly incarcerated face upon their return to society.
White earned third place for investigative reporting from the N.C. Press Association (2007) for a series of articles on how a Charlotte-Mecklenburg high school manipulated its campus grade point average and connected teacher bonuses by removing or encouraging struggling Black students to drop out.
Before joining The Post, White was a radio reporter at WMFD in Wilmington, North Carolina, and a journalist at the Wilmington StarNews and the Iredell County News in Statesville, North Carolina.
His freelance reporting has appeared in TIME magazine, The Charlotte Observer, and Our State magazine.
