Within two months, I was immersed in a country and its cuisine, complex history, and most importantly, its people. My reporting began in Cape Town, South Africa.
I had the opportunity to intern with iKapa Impact, a South African-based nonprofit founded by Dee Moskoff and focused on creating opportunities for students and professionals to experience a personalized, mutual-benefit experience in their respective industries and interests.
I also had the amazing opportunity to cover diversity in the culinary industry while reporting for the Daily Maverick, an independent South African publication, under the TGIFood Column’s editor, Tony Jackman.

As a nonprofit journalism organization, we depend on your support to fund more than 170 reporting projects every year on critical global and local issues. Donate any amount today to become a Pulitzer Center Champion and receive exclusive benefits!
Living in the township of Kayamandi while exploring the culinary industry prior to traveling to Soweto, Johannesburg, prepped me for an intensive month of community-building, unearthing colonialism, and conducting interviews and research about spaza shops and the complexities associated with the informal business sector.
I am grateful to the Pulitzer Center for the opportunity to report abroad to provide readers with insight to a sensitive topic. My reporting is now drawn to the "Rainbow Nation" and I hope to have the opportunity to interview and share more stories through the South African perspective.
