How Trust, Listening, and Engagement Turn Reporting Into Impact

Author:

Impact is at the heart of our work at the Pulitzer Center. It means that we don’t walk away after a story is published; we integrate strategic initiatives with global networks to elevate in-depth journalism, amplify our impact, and ensure relevance long after publication.

We place people at the center of our approach, with a focus on meeting audiences where they are—translating content into new formats, channels, and messengers. Listening, trust, and effective communication guide us along the way.

Our model connects journalists, academics, community leaders, decision-makers, educators, students—and the public at large—to find common ground within the differences of perspectives, and inspire new ways of working together.

  • We use art to bring stories to life. In Southeast Asia, the “I Miss You ... Pla Tu” engagement initiative reached nearly 1 million people, using exhibitions and performances to highlight marine ecosystem degradation.
  • We work with trusted influencers to expand reach. In the Amazon, the Waki Ambiental content creator program connected trusted influencers with reporting to create innovative digital campaigns that amplify the voices of people facing the most pressing environmental challenges.
  • We create conversations that empower young people. In the U.S., our youth outreach resulted in a record-breaking 1,875 entries to the 2025 Fighting Words Poetry Contest, empowering students to process their feelings about the news through poetry.
  • We inspire change that lasts. In the Democratic Republic of Congo, we transformed reports into comic books that reached 19,000 students and prompted the Ministry of Education to recommend integrating environmental education into the national curriculum.

Journalism can foster impact by building bridges across borders, barriers, and differences.
