The Pulitzer Center’s K-12 Education team is excited to present two workshops at the Teaching Black History Conference in Buffalo, New York. The conference will occur from Friday, July 21, to Sunday, July 23, 2023.

Pulitzer Center’s Donnalie Jamnah and Kendra Grissom will facilitate both workshops in person. Conference attendees will have the option to attend the workshops in person or online. 

The Birth of American Music: Legacies of Anti-Black Racism, Black Resistance, and Black Liberation in Our Popular Music

Friday, July 21, 2023, from 10:00am–11:00am EDT (in person or on Zoom)

Facilitators: 

  • Donnalie Jamnah, Senior Program Manager at the Pulitzer Center
  • Kendra Grissom, K-12 Education Intern at the Pulitzer Center 

Participants will explore the themes and resources from The 1619 Project from The New York Times Magazine in this session. Facilitators will share resources from The 1619 Project Education Network on Wesley Morris’s “The Birth of American Music” and, along with participants, explore how teachers have used the resource. Lastly, participants will engage in a discussion about the ways the resources could support participants’ curricula and goals for their students.

From the Break to the Beat: News Media Coverage of Black American Music and the Importance of Media Literacy

Saturday, July 22, 2023, from 11:10am–12:10pm EDT (in person or on Zoom)

Facilitators:

  • Kendra Grissom, K-12 Education Intern at the Pulitzer Center 

This workshop will start with an introduction to the Pulitzer Center and its mission for supporting engagement with underreported global issues. Next, participants will discuss the meaning and importance of media literacy. Then, they will explore various examples of media coverage of Black music. This exploration will include close readings and analyses of newspaper articles and identifying potential biases and trends in reporting on Black music. Pulitzer Center staff will then introduce participants to the Pulitzer Center's Journalist's Toolbox. Finally, Center staff will work with participants to analyze strategies for identifying and discussing authorship and bias in news media coverage of music and popular culture.
