How can The 1619 Project and other underreported stories from the past and present sharpen students’ critical thinking, empathy, and communication skills? How can we integrate the lessons and themes from The 1619 Project into the rich landscape of out-of-school time programs?
In this paid, virtual program, a small cohort of afterschool education professionals will explore these questions in community with other passionate out-of-school time educators, award-winning journalists, and the Pulitzer Center education team.
Educators in the 1619 Afterschool Partnership program will engage in six professional development workshops designed to support them in planning and implementing activities that introduce The 1619 Project and its themes to their students. Educators will be provided with a bank of activities that can be implemented as-is or adapted for use in their context. Partners will then implement and evaluate the activities with their students between December 2022 and February 2023.

The Pulitzer Center seeks to forward diversity, equity, and inclusion through our programs and partnerships. Educators from historically marginalized backgrounds, and educators who are teaching students from historically marginalized backgrounds, are strongly encouraged to apply.
This program is open to all afterschool professionals who support students in grades K-12 in the United States and U.S. territories. Educators may work in schools, school districts, nonprofit organizations, libraries, or carceral facilities, among other settings. Applicants must be currently leading afterschool programming virtually or in person, and plan to continue working in their current setting at least through February 2023.
This program is open to both instructors and administrators, so long as the applicant is able to oversee the implementation and evaluation of 1619 activities with a group of students in the fall/winter of 2022-23. All Partners will facilitate their activities between December 1, 2022 and February 17, 2023.
Because all sessions will be held virtually, applicants must have stable internet access and a computer with a webcam and microphone.
Partners will participate actively in six professional development workshops between October 2022 and February 2023 (schedule below). Workshops will provide opportunities to engage with underreported stories and the journalists who cover them in The 1619 Project and beyond. Partners will also examine strategies for engaging students safely and meaningfully in historical analysis and media literacy, and build community with a group of out-of-school time educators committed to racial justice education.
With the support of the Pulitzer Center education team, all partners will then…
- Facilitate at least one activity using resources from The 1619 Project during fall 2022 or winter 2023 with a group of students in their afterschool program
- A bank of activities created by the Pulitzer Center education team will be available to educators on Mizzen, a free platform for afterschool professionals. Learn more about the activities here. These activities can be implemented as-is, or adapted by Partners for their contexts.
- Evaluate their students’ learning and provide documentation of the activities facilitated by sharing both of the following:
- A short write-up and/or recorded presentation describing the activities implemented
- Student exemplars, reflections, and/or images and video that capture learning from the activities
- Complete a post-program evaluation survey
Timeline, Programming, and Key Dates:
Regular programming will consist of required cohort workshops, and optional reading groups. Reading groups are times to engage in-depth with the resources that make up The 1619 Project as learners.
In addition to one highly encouraged 1-on-1 consultation in December, your program advisor will be available to you via email and for meetings to offer support throughout the program.

Early on in the program, Partners will be asked to select a timeline for activity implementation that works well for their programming. All Partners should facilitate their activities between December 2022 and February 2023.
