This year, the Joy Village Team will craft a unit that ushers students into a direct confrontation with the history of slavery in their own hometown. This unit, entitled "From Passage to Powers: Slavery in Athens, Georgia" will examine the history of slavery in Athens, focusing on the life of famed local quilter Harriet Powers.
