This reporting project investigates the impacts of the expansion of oil and gas exploration in the Amazon, focusing on the Urucu hub in the municipality of Coari (AM) and Azulão, located between Silves and Itapiranga (AM).
Far from the coast, these two fields have become symbols of the advance of the energy frontier into the heart of the rainforest, driven by policies that seek to expand national fossil fuel production.
This investigation analyzes how these projects directly affect the region's biodiversity, put pressure on the territories of traditional and Indigenous communities, and represent an obstacle to climate change mitigation goals. This project also addresses plans for transporting and distributing production, which involve highways, rivers, and urban infrastructure, amplifying environmental risks on a large scale.
Through interviews with experts, local leaders, unpublished data, and visits to the territories, this reporting project seeks to contribute to the debate on the direction of Brazilian energy policy in the Amazon and the challenges of a just transition.
