Pete McKenzie
POST-GRAD REPORTING FELLOW
Pete McKenzie is a New Zealand journalist who writes about the Pacific and other topics for The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Guardian, and National Geographic, among others. In 2023, he was named Reporter of the Year at the annual New Zealand Media Awards, making him the youngest person in several decades to win the country's top journalistic honor.
Pete is also a Fulbright Scholar and been awarded Georgetti and Watson Scholarships from Universities New Zealand, a scholarship from the Association of Foreign Press Correspondents in the United States, a FASPE fellowship to study journalistic ethics in Germany and Poland, and the Lynton Fellowship in Book Writing from Columbia University. He holds a first class honours law degree from Victoria University of Wellington and a masters degree in journalism from Columbia University. He previously worked as a judge’s clerk in the New Zealand High Court and served as an infantry officer in the New Zealand Army Reserve.
