Jenn Thornhill Verma

2026 AND 2024 OCEAN REPORTING FELLOW (AMERICAS)

Jenn Thornhill Verma is a Canadian freelance journalist covering fisheries, oceans, and climate change. Her award-winning reporting combines rigorous evidence with compelling narrative, reported alongside those wearing the boots on the boats and in the harbors where the story happens.

In 2024-25, as a Pulitzer Center Ocean Reporting Network (ORN) Fellow, Jenn investigated Canada-U.S. cross-border protections for the critically endangered North Atlantic right whale for The Globe and Mail's Entangled series. Her reporting for The Globe's Unsettled series, examining how Labrador Inuit are adapting to climate change, led the team to gold in Environmental and Climate Change reporting at the 2025 Canadian Association of Journalists awards.

In 2026, Verma returns to the ORN with The Globe to report Surfaced, an international investigation into how regulatory gaps have enabled legally harvested Canadian Arctic species to disappear into illegal global markets.
