Ana María Arévalo Gosen
GRANTEE
Ana María Arévalo Gosen was born in Caracas, Venezuela. In 2009, she moved to Toulouse, France, where she studied political science (at the Institut d'Etudes Politiques) and found her passion for photography (ETPA, Ecole de Photographie).
In 2014, she moved to Hamburg, Germany, and worked as a freelance visual storyteller. Arévalo Gosen lives in Madrid and frequently develops projects in Latin America. She uses visual storytelling to advocate for women's rights, social, and environmental issues.
She is a National Geographic Explorer and a member of Ayün Fotógrafas. Mixing rigorous research with intimate stories, she aims to positively impact society through emotional, direct, and honest storytelling. Her mission is to bring about lasting social change. She is also an educator and lecturer with the Pulitzer Center, her workshop Ojo Pelao', among others.
Eternal Days, her ongoing long-term project about the conditions of women in prisons and pre-trial detention in Latin America (Venezuela, Guatemala, and El Salvador), won the Leica Oskar Barnack Award and the Camille Lepage Award in 2021. In 2020, she won the LHSA grant, the LUMIX Photo award, and the Lucas Dolega award.
In 2019, she won the Pictures of the Year (POY) Latam and won first place in the category "The Strength of Women." In 2021 and 2018, she received a grant from the Pulitzer Center and in 2018 from Women Photograph to continue this work. She plans to expand it throughout the region.
In 2021, she won the World Peace Photo Award for her work Sinfonia Desordenada with National Geographic. In 2023, she won the Marylin Stafford PhotoRepotage Award for her work Abuelas con 30, about the life of teenage parents in Venezuela.
Arévalo Gosen works for international media such as The New York Times, National Geographic, and El País Semanal. Her work has been exhibited at Fotografiska New York, GBG Arts Caracas, Capitis Gallery Hamburg, Ernst-Leitz Museum, Photoville New York, Helsinki Photo Festival, Manifesto Festival Toulouse, LUMIX Festival Berlin, Helsinki Photo Festival, and Leica Gallery in Madrid, Miami, Taipei, Taiwan, and London.
