Empowered Votes: The Fight for Democracy, Citizenship, Voting Rights in New York City

Our "Empowered Votes" project aims to engage students and their families around the coming mayoral election in New York City. Students will learn about the low voter participation rates in NYC (at 20% the last election) and become active builders of democracy in their community through the creation of podcasts. infographics, postcards, and skits. We will utilize 1619 materials and themes to teach students about the role of African Americans in shaping our democracy and making it more inclusive of others. Beyond their engagement and course work, students will hopefully inspire at least 5-10 adults to go the polls
