Coastal communities in South Africa are increasingly resorting to illegal activities for survival as marine food sources become scarce. The declining fish populations are not only affecting human livelihoods but also endangering marine life, with penguins suffering due to a lack of food.
Once-thriving towns that relied on marine tourism are now fading into obscurity as key wildlife disappears. Meanwhile, poachers continue to exploit South Africa’s marine resources just beyond the country’s borders, operating unchecked due to a lack of enforcement. The navy no longer has the capacity to deploy patrol boats, leaving these waters vulnerable to illegal fishing.
While the government has introduced commendable legislation aimed at protecting these areas, enforcement remains virtually nonexistent. Without the political will to ensure these laws are upheld, the situation continues to deteriorate, threatening both the environment and the communities that depend on it.
