Paid Teacher Workshop in Chicago: Global and Local Stories of Migration

In this workshop, K-12 educators and administrators supporting Chicago students will analyze Pulitzer Center-supported global news stories about migration. Teachers will explore the various factors that drive migration, the sacrifices people make when they leave home, the risks they take on their journeys, and the obstacles they encounter throughout. Teachers will also connect with WBEZ's public safety journalist, Chip Mitchell who will discuss his reporting The Venezuelan Migrant Experience — in Colombia, in Chicago. This workshop will be facilitated by K12 Education Manager, Jaya Mukherjee.

After this workshop, educators will be able to ….

  • Share a range of reporting with students on migration that centers the experiences of migrants, refugees, and displaced people
  • Leverage media literacy skills and resources to analyze migration reporting
  • Help students make personal and scholastic connections to news stories on migration 
  • Discuss a range of interconnected, systemic issues in the context of migration

Who is eligible: This opportunity is available to education professionals supporting Chicago students. Eligible participants include classroom teachers, administrators, and content specialists supporting Chicago public and public charter schools; out-of-school-time program staff and administrators; and educators supporting programming for youth in carceral facilities.

When: Saturday, April 19, 2025, from 9:30 am to 3:00 pm CDT. Coffee and lunch will be included.

Stipend: Each participating educator will receive a $50 stipend for attending, engaging, and completing a post-workshop survey.
