French authorities are countering Islamic radicalism in prisons with a ground-breaking new program.
In January and February 2016, grantee Christopher de Bellaigue spent several weeks researching radicalization in French jails, in particular so-called dedicated units that have been set up to deradicalize dangerous Islamists. The scheme is highly controversial, with many arguing that rather than deradicalize, the units will create ghettos.
