In this workshop, elementary students will learn what it means to be a refugee, explore how four child migrants around the world go to school, and reflect on common threads between their lives.

In Their Shoes [Workshop]: Understanding Forced Displacement Around the World

Warm-up: What is a refugee? What to children who are refugees experience?

Class-wide reading and discussion: Explore how children living in a refugee camp in Kenya go to school. 

Group reading and discussion: In groups, students learn about the lives of chidren living in uncertain conditions in Bangladesh or Mexico, and draw comparions between their lives, and the stories they've read. 

Reflection and conclusions: How are the stories similar? How are they different? What have students learned about these children's hopes and dreams, and how do they compare to theirs?

Extension Activities: 

Journalsim Project: Students follow journalist Jaime Joyce's process and write a story about recently arrived refugees and migrants in their community. 

Letter-writing: Students write letters urging elected officials to take action based on the challenges they read about.  

Picture book or graphic novel: Students illutrate and narrate a depiction of what life is like for children who are refugees.
