Reducing Health Disparities in Black and Brown Communities During a Pandemic

Warm-up: What have you heard about COVID-19? Who does it affect? 

Introducing the Lesson:  Discuss the over-representation of minority communities in coronavirus deaths, and learn that epidemics disproportionately affecting minority communities is not news to public health experts. 

Analyzing the Reporting: Analyze data, structural causes of disenfrancisement in health, and the path forward to solutions. 

Extension Activities:

1. Investigate structural causes: Use The 1619 Project to connect the current crisis to historical roots in slavery and the Civil War. 

2. Letter-writing: Research local data avilable on racial dimensions of the COVID-19 pandemic and urge representatives towards transparency on potential discrepancies.
