Analyzing the Exit of Private Prisons: Now What?

Warm-up: Who runs prisons and other corrections services? What usually happens when someone leaves prison?

Introducing the Lesson: Exploring the debate on government use of private companies to run prisons and other correctional services.

Analyzing the Reporting: Analyzing a news story about what happened when Denver, Colorado terminated contracts with private companies running halfway houses.

Extension Activities:

1. In-class debate: Form and present thoughtful arguments on both sides of the debate on private prisons and corrections services. 

2. Research project: Investigate how corrections are run in students' own communities.
