Journalism That Inspires Change: Apply to the Impact Initiative
The Pulitzer Center’s Impact Initiative is live.
The Pulitzer Center’s Impact Initiative is all about one simple, powerful idea: journalism that extends beyond publication and drives tangible change.
Through the Impact Initiative, we’re supporting reporting that doesn’t just inform—it inspires people to act. In this first phase, we’re offering both financial support (grants of $2,000–$5,000) and personalized guidance to former and current Pulitzer Center grantees and Fellows who want to deepen the impact of their work while upholding the highest journalistic standards.
Two years ago, the Pulitzer Center reimagined its strategic framework to place impact and audiences at the heart of everything we do. Since then, we’ve rebuilt programs, refined our theory of change, and listened carefully to what communities and journalists need.
Now, we’re ready to take it to the next level—extending this approach to our global network of grantees and Fellows.
The Impact Initiative builds on the success of the Pulitzer Center’s impact tracks:
- Empowering newsrooms: Offering practical blueprints and impact tools for newsrooms and freelance reporters around the world
- Advancing solutions on critical topics: Strengthening journalism’s role as a powerful resource for building knowledge and shaping public debate
- Driving community engagement: Cutting through the noise to ensure that quality reporting and compelling stories not only reach the communities that need them most but serve as catalysts for civic dialogue
- Inspiring the next generation: Sparking curiosity and critical thinking in students, who are our future leaders (and readers)
The Impact Initiative brings together journalism and engagement. We call it breakthrough journalism. This approach goes beyond uncovering facts; it's about helping people make sense of a complex, noisy world and empowering them to see their role within it.
Breakthrough journalism bridges divides and inspires collaboration to find solutions. It combines quality reporting with compelling stories that not only reach communities but also serve as catalysts for civic dialogue and lasting change.
This moment is deeply meaningful to us. It reflects our commitment to the future of journalism—one where we don’t just support great stories, but ensure they reach the right audiences and inspire real action.
For this call, the initiative will select former or current journalist grantees and Fellows whose Pulitzer Center-supported projects were published after January 1, 2020, and focused on one of the following topics: the ocean; rainforests; transparency and governance (e.g., corruption and money flows); climate and labor; health; racial justice; or AI accountability.
The deadline for applications is November 9, 2025, by 11:59pm EST.
Full details about the Impact Initiative can be found here.
We can’t wait to see the incredible ideas that will come from this—and to continue building a future where journalism doesn’t just tell the story, but changes it.
Looking forward to receiving your proposals,
Thank you!

Chief impact officer, Pulitzer Center
